Boxers Defeat Women’s Tennis In Season Finale

Charlotte Makoni and Hayley Kreps earn wins in singles.

FOREST GROVE, Ore. –Lewis & Clark College women's tennis and Pacific University entered Sunday's Northwest Conference match with identical 3-3 records in conference play and the final spot in the four-team postseason conference tournament on the line. The Boxers prevailed with a 7-2 win, ending the Pioneers' season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Freshman Charlotte Makoni and junior Hayley Kreps earned wins in the fifth and sixth singles matches for Lewis & Clark.
 
The Pioneers fell behind early, dropping all three doubles matches to the Boxers to start the day. Freshman Susanna Anand and senior Seraphina Vossen fell to sisters Cassidy and Sydnie Binder, 8-2 in the first doubles match. Junior Kacie Lau and senior Arielle Bloom lost 8-3 in the third flight to Valentina Casab-Klescova and Morgan Wagoner.
 
Makoni and Kreps played the most competitive doubles match at number two against Sofia Mazzola and Mia Yamaguchi. The Pioneer duo fell 8-6 in a close contest.
 
Pacific clinched the dual win with straight-set wins at first, second and fourth singles.
 
Bloom went three sets in the third singles flight against Casab-Klescova. After falling 6-3 in the first set 6-3, the Pioneer senior took the second set 7-5. The third set was decided by a 10-point super tiebreak in which Bloom lost 10-4.
 
Makoni earned one of the Pioneers' wins at number five singles, winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, over Yamaguchi.
 
Kreps dropped only one game in the final match of the day, defeating Wagoner 6-0, 6-1 in sixth singles.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Makoni finished her first year with the most singles wins (12) by a freshman since Caren Uribe had 11 in 2022, tied for the most singles wins in NWC play on the team (5), and the most NWC wins on the team (9) between singles and doubles.
  • Anand finished with a team high 16 singles wins and tied for the most singles wins in NWC play on the team (5).
  • Vossen and Anand won 10 doubles matches this season and became the first Pioneers to earn double digit wins in both doubles and singles play since 2018. Vossen ended her senior season with 10 singles victories.
WHAT'S NEXT
 
Lewis & Clark looks to return nine players next season, including five juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen from this year's squad that finished tied for fifth in the NWC.
