NEWBERG, Ore. -- Ramez Attia made the quarter finals of the ITA Northwest Regional Tournament, putting up the team's top performance of the weekend. Attia took on George Fox's Will Leach who advanced to the next round after two sets. Head Coach Jimmy Chau said of the performance, "Ramez had the best results but I was more pleased with how he dealt with some adversity and showed our guys how to compete."
Will McDermott and Brendan Adams made it through two rounds in doubles before being bested by George Fox 8-1, but the seniors have great things to build on heading into the spring. Shane Lynette did not compete in the singles consolation bracket.
Head Coach Jimmy Chau said of the weekend performance, "All in all, it was a good weekend. It was nice to see our upper class men turn in improved performances from years past and get a feel for what our first years are bringing to the table. We are far from where we need to be to compete with the conference favorites at this point but we have some good leadership and some pieces I think to make it interesting in April. The first years learned real quick about how college tennis is different than the juniors and are chomping at the bit. The energy/chemistry of this squad and the upside we have is going to make this a great year for growth and development. We have a long way to go but the program is poised for a great future. Time to get to work."
Ramez Attia gutted out an opening-round win over Whitman's Bear Lee before winning in straight sets to advance at Saturday's ITA Northwest Regional hosted by George Fox.
Attia defeated Lee in the third set 13-11. He had won the first set before Lee evened the match in the second. Attia went on to beat Aaron Yuan of Whitman 7-5, 6-2 and will go against No. 2 seed Will Leach of George Fox on Sunday at 1 p.m.
In doubles, Attia and Shane Lynette are in the tournament semifinals after an 8-5 win over a Whitman pair. The Pios duo defeated a Pacific group by an 8-3 final to open the bracket. Attia and Lynette will face George Fox's No. 2-seeded pair on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Brendan Adams and Riley Vickers were also first-round singles winners on Saturday. Adams bested Rene Del Barco of Puget Sound, 6-09, 6-0, but was defeated by Rox Rogers of George Fox afterward. Vickers took down Michael Mannion of Linfield, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9, before a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Luke Lemaitre of George Fox, the tournament's No. 3 seed.
Will McDermott and Lynette are still alive in the singles consolation bracket, which will resume on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Vickers and dos Santos picked up a win over a duo from Whitworth before losing 8-5 to a Whitman pair that would have put them in the main bracket.
dos Santos won 6-0, 6-1 over Paul Wallace of Puget Sound before losing in straight sets to Jonah Wafula of George Fox. Ryan Hayes was taken out by Aaron Yuan of Whitman, 6-0, 6-1, in his qualifying match.
The main brackets get underway starting Saturday at George Fox. The four-day tournament will run through Monday.
