PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Pioneers corner kick in the first-half set up a goal by junior Caroline Hennes to give Lewis & Clark the 1-0 win over visiting UC-Santa Cruz. This win keeps the Pioneers undefeated in preseason.
The Pioneers controlled the tempo for the majority of the game making it difficult for UC-Santa Cruz to pose a threat. Santa Cruz ended the game with only three shots on goal and were outshot by the Pios 12-5.
Lewis & Clark was the obvious aggressor of the game with 13 fouls to Santa Cruz's four. A couple Pios fouls just outside the box gave UC-Santa Cruz a chance to get back into the game, but they were unable to capitalize.
UC-Santa Cruz gave the Pioneers their first and only corner kick of the game early on in the 21st minute after stopping a run by Pios freshman Ella Viesturs. Sophomore Courtney Schmidt sailed the corner to Viesturs who brought it under control and passed it to Hennes for the shot. Hennes' shot passed slipped through the keeper's hands for the Pioneers' first and only goal of the game.
A Pios handball just outside their box gave UC-Santa Cruz a chance to tie the game with eight minutes left, but the free kick by Santa Cruz's Cayce Shaw missed high and right.
