Steve Golas Named Women's Soccer Coach

The Lewis & Clark College Department of Physical Education and Athletics announced the hiring of Steve Golas as the women's soccer coach and instructor within the department. Golas comes to L&C from Millikin University in Illinois .
Steve Golas has coached soccer at a variety of colleges and
universities over the past 8 years. Golas comes to L&C most
recently from Millikin University, a Division III liberal arts
college in Illinois, where he successfully accomplished one of the
most significant program turnarounds in college soccer history. The
2007 season was Millikin’s best season in program
history with a 12-7 record. The 2006 squad had finished with a
2-13 record.
Before Millikin, Golas was a staff coach for the Chicago Blast
Soccer Club and clinician for Soccer Made in America. Golas helped
direct the Blast to a National Soccer Indoor Championship in
February 2006.
An experienced college soccer and track coach, he spent two years
as the assistant women’s soccer coach at NCAA Division II
Angelo State University. While at Angelo State, Golas helped guide
the program to its highest-ever regional ranking and the first-ever
back-to-back 10-win seasons. Golas received head coaching
experience in both soccer and track at William Penn University
where his men’s soccer team finished second in the Midwest
Classic Conference (MCC) and he was named the MCC Track Coach of
the Year. Golas has also coached women’s soccer at Bemidji
State University.
Golas earned his Bachelor of Arts in History at Coe College where
he was a four-year varsity letter winner in soccer and a three-year
varsity letter winner in track. He has a Master of Science in
Sports Studies from Bemidji State. He will officially begin his
duties June 15, 2008.
Golas' wife, Becky Golas, will also be working with the soccer
program as an assistant coach.
Becky Golas joined the Millikin University women’s soccer
program as a volunteer assistant coach in August 2006. Originally
from Elgin, Ill., Golas holds a USSF amateur coaching license.
Golas brings a considerable amount of coaching experience,
including time at Michigan
State University (2003-05) where she helped guide the Spartans to
a 21-13-1 record and a berth to the 2003 Big Ten Postseason
Tournament. She also served one year as an assistant coach at
Angelo State University (2005).
"I am incredibly excited to take over the women's soccer program at Lewis & Clark," said Steve Golas. "On my visit to campus I was struck by the beauty of the campus, the commitment of the school to academic excellence, and the desire of the athletic department to be a consistent contender in the Northwest Conference. I can't wait to begin working with the current team as we establish ourselves as a team to be respected in the conference."
"We are very excited about the addition of Steve Goals to our coaching staff," said Director of Athletics Clark Yeager. "I would also like to thank graduating senior Lisa Housman for all of her efforts this spring to assist the department with communicating with our incoming soccer recruits. Her assistance has been invaluable during this transition time."
The two coaches take over a Pioneer program that has 14 returning players and 13 newcomers, including 2 transfers, vying for a spot on the squad. The 2007 team finished in ninth place in the Northwest Conference with a 2-15-2 overall records, going 2-14-1 in the NWC.
