No. 25 Pioneers win by 25 strokes at UCSC Invitational

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. -- A second-day 3-over-par 75 by Annie McCutchan helped the 25th-ranked Lewis & Clark Pioneers take the team title at the UCSC Spring Invitational on Sunday, their second team trophy of the season.

McCutchan placed second overall, two strokes behind medalist Jenna Jensen of Corban, with a two-day total of 162. She shaved 12 strokes off her opening-round score and posted the lowest total on the second day.

Jane Almeida, Lewis & Clark's first-round leader, followed Saturday's 83 with an 81 to finish fourth with a 20-over-par 164. Her overall total is her second-lowest score during the 2016-17 season, matching the 164 she posted at September's Pacific Invite.

All five Pioneers placed in the top seven, moving up from top-10 positions following Saturday's play.

Arielle Valdez took six strokes off her first-day 86 to post an 80 in the final round and a 166 overall, good enough for a tie for fifth place.

Claire Burke and Tori Eichten were identical with scores of 88-79-167 over the two days, tying for seventh at 23 over par.

Corban, which finished second in the team totals with a 682, placed three golfers in the top 10, although two of the three trailed Burke and Eichten. Olivia Bean of UC-Santa Cruz was third and Willamette's Maddi Barnett was fifth as the only other non-Lewis & Clark competitors to place in the top 10.

Lewis & Clark has five top-two team finishes in eight events this year. The Pioneers play at the NWC Spring Classic this weekend at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
