Valdez, No. 24 Pios finish runner-up at Willamette Valley Cup

OREGON CITY, Ore. -- Senior Arielle Valdez's 4-over-par 76 put her in second place after Saturday's opening round of the Willamette Valley Cup. Poor weather and green conditions led to the cancellation of tournament's final round, and as a result, Valdez earned a runner-up spot to being the spring season.

Lewis & Clark, ranked No. 24 to start the spring in the Golfstat Relative Rankings, earned a second-place finish as well. The Pioneers were seven storkes back of No. 1 George Fox, whose Sydney Maluenda earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 71 on Saturday at Stone Creek Golf Club.

Tori Eichten and Annie McCutchan were also in the top five for Lewis & Clark after both posted 79 on Saturday. Along with George Fox's Janelle Decker, Kristin Elich and Madison Petty, Eichten and McCutchan placed fifth.

Shooting her best round of her final season, Valdez was tied with Corban's Carrie Wallace for second and Iris Kawada of George Fox was fourth with a 78. Valdez's best round prior to this weekend was a 77 at the Culturame Classic on Sept. 30.

Lewis & Clark's Claire Burke was also in the top 10 after the opening round with an 82. Jane Almeida was Lewis & Clark's other counting score, as she posted a 90 to sit in 17th place.

As individuals, Annika Clunk and Abbi Rautenberg shot 92 and 95, respectively.
