Pioneers fall to NWC-leading Loggers

PORTLAND, Ore. -– Unable to hold onto an early first-half lead, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers lost 74-57 to the Puget Sound Loggers on Friday night at Pamplin Sports Center.

The loss keeps Puget Sound undefeated in Northwest Conference play, while the Pios dropped their second straight. Lewis & Clark remains in fourth place in the NWC, which is the last spot for the NWC tournament in late February.

The Pios put up the first five points of the game off of an Ayisat Afolabi layup and Janessa Willie 3-pointer. The Loggers managed to pull ahead by four at the end of the quarter, shooting an impressive 60 percent from the floor.

The Lewis & Clark defense drove down Puget Sound's percentage in the second half, allowing the Pioneers to keep within four over the course of the quarter. Lauren Wood grabbed three defensive rebounds, giving her over 300 for her collegiate career, adding to Afolabi's two and keeping the Loggers offensive rebounds under four for the half.

With three points left in the third quarter, the Pioneers were down by 14 after a string of unanswered Puget Sound scores. The Loggers (19-1; 11-0 NWC) kept the Pioneers to a game-low 11 points for the quarter, while scoring 27 of their own.

Trailing to start the fourth quarter, Lewis & Clark managed to score a game-high high 17 points and hold Puget Sound to only 14. With their worst field goal percentage since Jan. 14 when they shot 28 percent against Willamette, the Pioneers were only 36 percent from the floor on Friday night.

Afolabi logged her 13th double-double of the year, with 15 points and 11 rebounds, as well as one block and three steals. Fellow senior Sarah Anderson had 13 points, going 50 percent on threes and improving her national ranking in three-point percentage. She entered the game ranked fourth in the country. Willie led the team in assists with four. Juniors Miyah Leith and Rachel Cox combined for 19 points.

The Pioneers (14-7; 7-5 NWC) play at Willamette on Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. and return home for Senior Night against Pacific on Feb. 11 at 4 p.m.
