Pios move to 9-2 after finishing non-conference slate with victory

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers won their ninth game of the season and completed a sweep of their pair of D3Hoops.com Classic games with a 58-49 victory over the Stevens Ducks on Thursday afternoon.

The Pios forced 20 turnovers overall and jumped out to a 14-5 lead by the end of the first quarter to improve to 9-2 on the season. Thursday's game completed Lewis & Clark's non-conference schedule.

Having last won the Northwest Conference championship in 2013, Lewis & Clark resumes NWC games at two-time defending champion George Fox on Jan. 3.

Miyah Leith had 17 points on 5 of 9 shooting to lead the Pioneers. Janessa Willie scored 15 off the bench and Ayisat Afolabi notched her third straight and sixth overall double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Lewis & Clark, which shot 37 percent for the game, hit on 44 percent of its shots in the final two quarters. The Pios also held a 21-5 advantage in points off of turnovers and gave the ball away 11 times themselves.

Megan Brown had 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead Stevens (1-6).

The Pioneers (9-2; 2-0 NWC) have lost just once after opening the season with a 60-56 defeat against Corban, going 9-1 since. Lewis & Clark is one of three teams with a 2-0 NWC record, with George Fox as one of a trio at 1-1. Five of the teams atop the NWC standings have a combined 44-8 overall record.

Lewis & Clark's game at George Fox starts at 6 p.m. on Jan. 3.
