David Fix became the Head cross Country Coach for the Pioneers
in 1981. A 1970 graduate of Lewis & Clark, David was a
four-year letter winner in both cross country and track, setting
school records in the two-mile, three-mile, and steeplechase.
In cross country, he was two-time conference champion and the first
to win back-to-back titles (1967 & 1968). David was a
four-time conference all-star with a fourth-place in 1966 as a
freshman, champion as a sophomore and junior, and a third-place
finish as a senior in 1969. He was also a two-time NAIA
District #2 champion, and three-time Oregon AAU collegiate
champion. In track, twice he was conference and district
champion and he set records in the conference three-mile and the
district steeplechase. All four years, David raced at the
national track championships finishing 7th in the steeplechase in
1967 and 9th in the 5,000m in 1968. He was elected into the Lewis
& Clark Hall of Fame in 1981.
Getting his start in running at Wilson High
School, David was a four-year participant in both cross country and
track, lettering his junior and senior years. As a junior, he
was 13th in the state cross country championships and as a senior
he finished second after having lead the field for most of the
race. Wilson placed second as a team both years. In track,
David competed at the state meet in the two-mile both his junior
and senior seasons.
Before returning to L&C, David was an
assistant coach at Eastern Illinois University (1970-71), head
coach at Eastern Oregon State College (1971-72), assistant coach at
the University of Oregon (1972-75), and the head coach at San
Francisco State University (1975-81). David returned to Lewis &
Clark in 1981 to take over the track program upon the
retirement of his father and former head coach, Eldon Fix.
For the 2007 season, David turns over the Head
Coaching duties to Keith Woodard and will instead will serve as an
assistant coach and as the recruiting coordinator, working on
finding multi-sport athletes to help build up many of the Pioneer
sports teams. David will continue to coordinate the administrative
aspects of the cross country program, including overseeing meet
operations. He will be the point person for the 2007 NCAA III West
Regionals, hosted by Lewis & Clark, and held at McIver Park the
second weekend of November. David will also serve as an assistant
coach for cross country and will remain as the Head Track and Field
Coach.
David led the 2005 women’s cross country
team to a second-place team finish at the Northwest Conference
Championships en route to being named the NWC Coach of the Year
with Keith Woodard.
David earned his B.S. in health and physical
education at Lewis & Clark, his M.S. in physical education at
Eastern Illinois University, and his Ph.D. in physical education at
the University of Oregon. His wife Paula is a middle school
physical education teacher, and they have two children, Kyle and
Adria.
