Avery, Bucknovitz finish top eight to start L&C Spring Break Open

OREGON CITY, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers had two finish in the top eight of their events as the L&C Spring Break Open began with the hammer and javelin throws at Clackamas Community College on Friday afternoon. 

The competition will shift to Eldon Fox Track at Griswold Stadium on the Lewis & Clark campus on Saturday morning. 

Sarah Bucknovitz had the best showing for the Pioneers on day one, throwing 147 feet, 6 inches (44.95m) to place seventh in the hammer. Ellery Creighton and Syrah Starnes missed the finals. Creighton's best toss was 112 feet, 2 inches (34.18m) for 17th. Starnes threw 110 feet, 10.25 inches (32.56m) to finish two spots behind Creighton. 

Noah Avery, who finished third in last year's decathlon at the Northwest Conference Championships, was eighth in the men's javelin. His mark was 145 feet, 7.5 inches (44.38m). At 112 feet, 9.75 inches, David Lovitz was 13th. 

Starnes, Boo Kirkwood and Morgan Taylor also competed in the women's javelin, with Starnes' mark of 88 feet, 5.25 inches (26.95m) the best from the three. 

Competition begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the women's long jump and men's high jump.
