2008 Track & Field Season

For the fifth straight year, Lewis & Clark had one of their Pioneer athletes competing at the NCAA III National Track & Field Championships.
Roxanne Gilbride (junior, Bend, Ore.) capped her season by earning an elusive invitation to the National Championships. Gilbride had hit provisional qualifying marks each of the last two seasons, but had twice missed the cut. After becoming the Pioneers' sole event champion at the Northwest Conference Championships, winning the javelin with a provisional qualifying mark of 132-10, Gilbride improved on her mark at the Pacific Twilight meet. With a mark of 136-9, almost four feet better than her previous provisional mark, she moved up to sixth on the national list. When the invitees were announced, Gilbride ranked eighth and easy earned her trip to Nationals.
At the NCAA III Track & Field Championships in Oshkosh, Wisc. in the javelin, Gilbride threw 123-2, ranking her 12th among the 16 semi-finalists. She failed to advance to the finals for the event and ends her season with a 12th-place finish at the National Championships.
Amanda Phillips (senior, Phoenix, Ore.) was also vying for a trip to Nationals, competing in the 5000m. She ran a provisional time of 17:33.11 at the Western Oregon Twilight meet in Monmouth, Ore. one week before the list of competitors for the National Championships were announced. Phillips performance ranked her 21st among all DIII runners in the event this season, but she failed to make the final field of 18 athletes. Her mark at the Western Oregon meet, however, did set the school record for the 5000m. Phillips also owns the school's 1500m record, which she set last year en route to qualifying for the National Championships.
For the teams, both the men and the women finished in eighth place at the Northwest Conference championships. In addition to Gilbride's javelin championship, Leif Bullock (senior, La Grande, Ore.) was seventh in the 1500m with a 4:06.40. Joevonte Mayes (freshman, Milwaukie, Ore.) placed seventh in the 100m with an 11.50. Amanda Phillips placed fourth in the 5000m with a 18:09.88, and Cheyenne Feliz (freshman, Davis, Calif) was fifth in the 400m with a 1:02.85. Phillips also had a seventh-place finish in the 1500m with a 4:52.94. Feliz also scored in the 200m, finishing seventh with a 26.81.
