Pioneers Fall To Whitman In Season Opener

WALA WALA, Wash., - In Friday afternoon's season opener for both teams, Whitman defeated Lewis & Clark College 6-3 in the Bratton Tennis Center.

The Pioneers received points in singles play from sophomore Amalia Nilsson and freshman Jill Coleman. Nilsson defeated Elise Otto from the No. 1 singles position by taking straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. Coleman’s victory came at the No. 5 spot, knocking off Emily Rolston in a hard fought battle. Coleman battled back after dropping the first set 4-6, to win the next two 6-4, 10-5.

In doubles action, Nilsson teamed up with Whitney DeBree to beat Otto/Margo Lentz 8-5, but it would not be enough to earn the Pioneers a team win.

Lewis & Clark falls to 0-1 on the season, while Whitman is now 1-0. Lewis & Clark travels to Spokane, Wash., on Saturday to play a 10 a.m. match at Whitworth.
