Softball Ends Season with a Victory

The Pioneer split their season ending doubleheader against the Corban College Warriors falling 3-1 (box score) in game one before coming back with a 5-4 victory (box score) in game two. A clutch two-out single by Paige McFeeley helped the Pioneers win the game.

In game one, the Pioneers played a good defensive game, but were plagued by a couple of big hits. In the bottom of the first inning, Corban took a 2-0 lead when their second batter of the game stroked a home run to center field. They added a run in the second when the same hitter smacked an RBI double to put the Warriors up 3-0.

In the sixth inning, the Pioneers’ Kim Kittell (sophomore, Tillamook, Ore.) got a one-out single. After Sheree Miura walked, Laura Parker singled to left to load the bases. Kittell scored on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Natalie Matson (grad, Astoria, Ore.) tried to help out her own cause and keep the inning alive. Matson hit the ball dead on, lining it sharply to the right side, but a great play by the Corban second baseman ended the Pioneer threat. The Warriors held on for the 3-1 victory.

Matson pitched a strong game, but took the loss, pitching six innings, allowing eight hits, walking none, and striking out four.

In game two, the Pioneers struck first, scoring a run in the third inning. Kelly Vega (sophomore, Beaverton, Ore.) connected with the first pitch she saw to single up the middle. Kittell followed with a slap hit to the pitcher, getting two aboard for the Pioneers. Vega and Kittell advanced on a sacrifice by Sheree Miura (senior, Waipahu, Hawaii). A groundout by Jessica Mullins (sophomore, Randle, Wash.) scored a run to put the Pioneers up 1-0.
Corban tied the game in the fourth. A leadoff walk came around to score after several wild pitches in the inning. With two outs, that run in, and two runners on, Paige McFeeley (freshman, Boise, Idaho), came in to face a batter with a 1-0 count. McFeeley through three straight strikes to strikeout the batter and end the Corban threat before further damage could be done.

With the game tied 1-1 going into the sixth, the Pioneers offense came through.. After hits from Jessica Mullins, Jamie Moon (sophomore, Baker City, Ore.) and Sarah DiSabatino (senior, Pleasanton, Calif.) loaded the bases with two outs, Paige McFeeley came up with a big single up the middle to score two runs. Karyne Sander (senior, Grants Pass, Ore.) followed with a double to score two, putting the Pioneers up 5-1.

Corban got their first two runners aboard, with both advancing and ultimately scoring on a series of throwing errors and wild pitches by the Pioneers. After another batter reached on a bloop hit to right, the Pioneers brought in Nathalie Matson to try to close out the game. Matson, facing a pinch hitter who had doubled off her twice in the first game, induced a pop up to end the inning.

The Pioneers got their leadoff runner, Kim Kittell, aboard in the seventh. Kittell advanced to third with one out, but could not score.
With the Pioneers unable to score an insurance run, it was up to Nathalie Matson to lock down the Corban batters in the seventh. Matson got a groundout to second to start the inning, but then gave up a walk. A close call at second that did not go the way of the Pioneers on a steal attempt put the tying run in scoring position, but Matson got another groundout to second and then a pop up to the catcher to earn a save in her final game as a Pioneers.

Karyne Sander and Sarah DiSabatino each had two hits in their final Pioneer doubleheader. Jessica Mullins and Kim Kittell each had three hits on the afternoon.

Kelly Vega earned her second win of the season. She threw 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, four runs (only one of which was earned), walking two and striking out four.

The Pioneers end the season with a 3-34 record.
