TACOMA, Wash. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers were on the road Sunday, traveling to Pacific Lutheran University to defeat the Lutes in a 9-0 sweep inside the Sprinker Recreation Center. The win keeps the Pios at the top of the Northwest Conference, as they remain undefeated. The Lutes (2-4, 2-3 NWC) lay in fifth.
Jackson Powell and Keane Hindle carried Saturday's success to Sunday, taking seven straight games in their No. 3 doubles match. They eventually won in straight sets. Michael Brewer and Raed Attia, at No. 2, held an early 3-2 lead, and won 8-5. Gordon and Brenden Barrows came back from a 2-2 tie to win 8-4.
In singles play, the Lutes Ryan Adams pushed Attia to tiebreaker third set, where Attia grabbed the, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4, win the No. 1 spot. Brewer grabbed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2.
G. Barrows, in the No. 3 spot, grabbed the only 6-0 set, defeating Pacific Lutheran's James Okuba with a 6-1 second set. At No. 4 and 5 respectively, Powell and B. Barrows both won 6-1, 6-1. Rounding out the 9-0 win, Hindle finished off the Lutes John Woelfel 6-3, 6-1.
The Pioneers play both matches at home this coming weekend, taking on Willamette on Saturday at 11 a.m.
