McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- The top doubles pair was the only missed point for the 32nd-ranked Lewis & Clark Pioneers in Saturday afternoon's 8-1 defeat of the Linfield Wildcats at the Linfield Tennis Center. The victory keeps the Pios undefeated in Northwest Conference duals leading into Sunday's match in Portland against George Fox, which entered the weekend 3-0 in conference.
Gordon Barrows and Brenden Barrows, both of whom went on to win singles matches, lost the No. 1 doubles match, 9-8 (9-7), to Tyler Linscott and Ben McNair. The loss was the second by the Barrowses this season, dropping their record to 2-2 in NWC duals.
The Pioneers used wins in the other two doubles matches to take a 2-1 team lead into the singles pairings. Raed Attia and Michael Brewer had a closer match at No. 2 than the Pios' No. 3 pair of Jackson Powell and Ben DeLuca. In second position, Attia and Brewer were 8-5 winners over Jose Luis Rojas and John Lutaaya, while the No. 3 team beat Trent Prussing and Nathan Saragoza, 8-1. Both Lewis & Clark teams stayed undefeated in NWC matches. Brewer and Attia improved to 2-0, while Jackson and DeLuca bumped up to 3-0.
The closest singles match was at No. 6, which DeLuca won over Lutaaya, 7-5, 6-3. The win kept DeLuca perfect in NWC duals, 4-0, with a 2-0 mark when playing in sixth position.
Powell defeated Prussing, 6-0, 6-2, in Lewis & Clark's only singles match to feature a clean set. The win was the first in NWC singles for Powell as a collegiate student-athlete.
The top three singles matches were all similar in score. Attia moved to 3-1 on the season with a No. 1 singles win over Linscott, 6-1, 6-3. At No. 2, Brewer improved to 2-1 in NWC play overall with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Rojas. Gordon Barrows ticked up to 4-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of McNair at No. 3.
At No. 5, Brenden Barrows won 6-1, 6-3 over Saragoza and improved to 4-0 in NWC play.
The Pioneers host George Fox at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the L&C Tennis Dome.
