Justin Baughman made his Pioneer head coaching debut in the 2006
season. A Lewis & Clark baseball alum, the former Major League
Baseball player was drafted by the (then) California Angels in the
fifth round of the 1995 amateur draft, playing eight years in the
Angels and White Sox systems. Baughman had two stints in the Major
Leagues with the Angels, playing parts of the 1998 and 2000 seasons
after sitting out the entire 1999 season with a broken leg, playing
second base, short stop, and DHing for the (then) Anaheim Angels,
ending his career with a .252 average and a .765 stolen base
percentage. Baughman last played professional baseball in 2002 as a
member of the Charlotte (N.C.) Knights, triple-A affiliate of the
Chicago White Sox. Baughman spent the 2004 and 2005 in the
Angels’ farm system as the hitting coach for the Class-A
Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Kernels.
Baughman played for the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers from
1993-95 under Coach Jerry Gatto. A career .370 hitter for the
Pioneers (the best amongst all players with at least 400 career
at-bats), he holds the school records for most steals in a season
(34) in 1995, and most steals in a career (76) and led the team in
runs scored all three seasons he played at Lewis & Clark. He
also played one season of football (93) at the college. Baughman is
one of two Pioneers to play in the Major Leagues. 1963 AL Rookie of
the Year Pete Ward played in the Major Leagues from 1962-1970 after
an impressive career at Lewis & Clark College.
Baughman continued to work on his degree after going pro,
graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business from Lewis &
Clark in 2001.
Justin and his wife Serena (Lewis & Clark ‘98, MAT
‘00) reside in Portland, Ore. with their daughters Adele (6)
and Lucia (3).
