Crew Team Participates in Green Torch Relay

On Sunday, October 21st, nine members of the Pioneer Men's & Women's Crew used their day off  to take part in the Green Torch Relay. The Green Torch Relay, which included approximately 100 runners, bicyclists and rowers from the University of Portland, Lewis & Clark College, Linfield College and Willamette University, kicked off in Portland on Sunday, Oct. 21 and concluded at the state Capitol on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Relay participants delivered an invitation to senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden, signed by more than 3,000 students and community members, to participate in Focus the Nation events.

Focus the Nation is a major educational initiative that will coordinate teams of faculty and students at over a thousand colleges, universities and high schools in the United States, to collaboratively engage in a nationwide, interdisciplinary discussion centered around the theme of “Stabilizing the Climate in the 21st Century”. The project will culminate in the month of January 2008, in the form of one-day, national symposia held simultaneously on campuses across the country.

Lewis & Clark Crew accepted the responsibility of rowing the torch from Oaks Park (just down the hill from Lewis & Clark) up to George Rogers park (just South of Lake Oswego).  Rowing in a mixed eight, they covered about five miles by river.

Members of the crew who participated include Micah Depper, Justin Markahm, Bryce Youngquist, Charlie Morgan, Sam Edwards, Jess Asbridge, Eli Fabens, Allison Sweeney, and Sarah Aldrich.
