Mark is entering his fourth year at Lewis & Clark with more than twelve years of experience in athletic management, operations, coaching, and customer relations at either the college or professional level. During Mark's 4 years on palatine hill he has helped the department oversee major renovations to the athletic facilities including new bleachers systems for Pamplin Gymnasium and Zehntbauer Swimming Pavilion., a new scoreboard system in Pamplin gym as well as a new sound system for the indoor pool. Mark assisted Athletic Director Clark Yeager in the planning, designing, and implementation of the brand new Pamplin Information Center/Reception Desk beginning spring semester 2010. Mark created a new policy and procedure handbook for work study students at Pamplin Sports Complex. .Mark has recently helped oversee major renovation of the Huston batting cage as well as other major upgrades to both the baseball and softball field.
The Huston Sports Complex batting cage has been transformed into one of the premier covered outdoor hitting instruction areas in the Northwest Conference. The hitting structure has been completely remodeled and cleared of all the old turf, sanded and painted structure with a high gloss black finish, built a new floating floor deck/floor and installed professional quality synthetic surface that is specific for batting cages. Other improvements to the Huston Sports Complex are all new custom windscreen and custom fence-guard as well as distance markers for both the baseball and softball fields. Coming later this summer is all new professional grade cinder warning track that will enclose the entire baseball and softball field. Additional improvements to Huston are planned for the future.
Before his time on Palatine Hill, Mark was at Portland State University where he spent three seasons as the Viking's Assistant Athletic Equipment Coordinator. At PSU, Mark was responsible for assisting in the ordering, purchasing, inventory and distribution of all athletic apparel and equipment to student-athletes and coaches/staff. Mark was fortunate to get to work with former football coach Tim Walsh (currently head coach at Cal Poly) and former NFL coach Jerry Glanville and one of the inventors of the run and shoot offense and PSU legend Mouse Davis.
Prior to working at PSU, Mark was a facility supervisor at the brand new Regional Sports Center in Springfield, Ore. At the Regional Sports Center, Mark was in charge of all set-up needs and scheduling for over 10 basketball/volleyball/hockey leagues and also special events such as AAU tournaments, Volleyball tournaments and roller hockey matches. Mark was in charge of updating the website and schedules and standing on the Region Sports Center Website. Mark also assisted in marketing and promotion to local school districts and area athletic groups before the grand opening and during the first year of operation.
Mark began his career in athletics as the Head Student Manager for football at Oregon State University. Mark was student manager from 1998-2002; a four-year stretch that sits in OSU history as one of the greatest four years in the football programs storied history. Mark's first season in 1998 saw the beavers come one win short of a winning season going 5-6, ending the year in dramatic fashion with a 44-41 double overtime Civil War victory over the ducks. 1999 saw the beavers secure their first winning season in 28 years as the beavers went to the Oahu bowl and first bowl game in decades. Following the breakthrough year, the OSU team had it's best year in school history winning the 2000 Pac-Ten Championship and Fiesta Bowl Championship on their way to a #4 ranking in the BCS. During his years at Oregon State, Mark was fortunate to get to work for former NFL coaches Mike Riley and Dennis Erickson. During his years in Corvallis, Mark got to work with future NFL players Derek Anderson (Cleveland Browns/Arizona Cardinals), Chad Ochocinco (Cincinnati Bengals), T.J Houshmanzadeh (Cincinnati Bengals/Seattle Seahawks), Nick Barnett (Green Bay Packers) and Steven Jackson (St. Louis Rams). After his four years Mark worked for longtime OSU equipment manger Steve "Lightning" McCoy.
After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communication and Athletic Administration from Oregon State University, Mark was awarded a season-long internship from the San Francisco 49ers and coach Dennis Erickson. Mark spent the entire 2003-04 season assisting the running backs and the equipment staff. Mark was in charge of setting up the practice fields each day, daily operations and cleaning of team and staff locker rooms, maintenance and inventory of all equipment and uniforms, practice laundry and packing game trunks and players' bags for road games. Mark traveled with the 49ers to all away games and assisted with the transportation of all equipment to and from home and away games. Mark worked for San Francisco equipment coordinator Steve Urbaniak and assistant Doc Dressler. During his time in San Francisco Mark was fortunate to meet NFL hall of fame members Bill Walsh, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young and Y.A Tittle.
Mark's other work experience includes being a recruiting intern for the Oregon State Football team in 2003, Operations Assistant at the United States Basketball Academy for Kareem Abdul Jabbar's Big Man Camp as well as the Chinese Basketball Association Draft Camp. Mark was the head girls freshman basketball coach at Corvallis High School from 1999-2001. Mark was part of the varsity coaching staff at Corvallis during the 2001 season that saw the Spartans reach the state tournament for the first time in school history. Mark also spent a season as the head girl's freshman coach at Springfield High School. Mark participated in football and baseball at North Eugene High School in Eugene, Oregon. Mark was a member of three league championship baseball teams and participated in the National Classic Baseball Tournament in Orange County, CA during his senior season. Mark played for one of Oregon's all time winningest coaches, Garry Selby.
Mark is married to the former Ashlee Lawrence. Mark and Ashlee reside in Portland, Ore. with their beagle Coco.
